D.Hall Plant Hire & Groundworks were contracted in by a local developer to get their new site ready for development in North Cornwall.

Our Work Approach

We mobilised our 13T excavator, riddle bucket & 9T dumper to undertake these works.

Initially, we had to gain access through the field next door before creating a new wider entrance against the road as per their planning application.

We got to work riddling the hedgerow alongside the road with our 13T excavator; riddling consists of a digger bucket with 65mm spacings which keeps all the big rocks within the excavator’s bucket and lets the smaller stuff fall through. This is a great way of salvaging material. This hedge mainly consisted of old concrete blocks and cornish hedging stones we placed in a pile away from the footprint of the new proposed development, leaving the client time to decide what they proposed to do with the surplus material, which couldn’t be loaded away with the topsoil.

The next task was to perform a topsoil strip across the whole site. D.Hall Plant Hire & Groundworks, a company with over 15 years of experience, would normally anticipate topsoil to be anywhere from 100mm/.300mm thick. The topsoil on this site near Davidstow, Cornwall, was 1 metre thick! Which was a shock to the client and us but with groundworks, there is always the unknown factor within the ground! We created a stockpile at the far end of the site before organising to cart it off-site.

We removed 35 loads of topsoil from the site on a 6Wheeled lorry which is around 560 tons!
