Exeter University Project

Commercial groundworks contract for Exeter University campus infrastructure development in Devon

📍 Exeter, Devon
🏗️ Commercial Project
Completed 2024

Project Overview

D Hall Plant Hire & Groundworks Ltd completed groundworks for a new Cryostore facility at Exeter University, working as a subcontractor to Mercury Construction. This project involved two distinct phases of specialized concrete work for the university's research infrastructure, with particularly challenging existing concrete conditions.

Phase 1 involved breaking out existing concrete surface, removing concrete waste, excavating trenches to specified depth, and coordinating with Kenex Engineering for steelwork installation. We applied D49 wrapping mesh to the steelwork, installed 20mm compressible isolation joints at trench edges, and filled with RC50XF concrete to structural specifications.

Phase 2 required breaking out some of the toughest concrete we had encountered in years for an additional 4m × 3.5m slab. After concrete waste removal, we installed H16 dowel bars, placed 20mm compressible isolation joints at the perimeter, and laid two layers of A393 mesh reinforcement before pouring RC50XF concrete with a brushed finish. The challenging conditions and specialist requirements showcased our expertise in complex university infrastructure projects.
